QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
As the global quality movement has evolved over the years, most
industries have achieved dramatic improvements. Many organizations
sustain ISO standards and for some, Six Sigma quality is an attainable
goal.
Yet quality issues persist. This is partly because quality requirements
are getting tighter; but it is also because many process control
efforts are not institutionalized in the way an organization does
business. Too often, the very people asked to control variation
are the source of variation. People may fail to correctly analyze
the situation and then take inappropriate action, or make a valid
response without identifying other, potential interactions.
In a manufacturing environment, there are essentially two ways
to deal with problems: develop troubleshooting expertise or prevent
problems from occurring. All organizations need the capability
to do both and do them well.
